Immune Boosting Smoothie

After experiencing one bout of sickness in our family this winter, I am looking to boost our immune function any way I can. So, I am happy to slurp up some of my favorite immune boosting foods all together in one glass! Asian pears, along with their crisp and refreshing texture, are prized in Chinese medicine for their ability to combat mucus and coughs. All that combined with the healing properties of ginger, lemon, and mint and we are feeling revived and ready to combat the back to school germs.

  • 1 cup greens (fresh or frozen – I used kale, but spinach would be great too)
  • 1 TBSP moringa powder (I use Kuli Kuli)
  • 2 asian pears
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 TBSP lemon juice
  • 3 tsp chopped ginger
  • ~20 mint leaves
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup nut milk

  1. Blend all ingredients on high for 1 minute or until it has reached a smooth, uniform texture.

Hi! I'm Jen - a Canadian gal living here in Austin with my husband and two kids. We love being outdoors in the sunshine or in the water, so living in Austin is a dream - a little less dreamy when it's 110 degrees out :-/. But really, I love to start every weekend with a morning on the greenbelt and a stop at Flitch coffee. Since childhood, I've had a up and down relationship with food and consequently, spent years in poor health. Therefore, I learned to cook. I had to get off my college canned soup diet and actually learn how to hold a paring knife. I began to work in kitchens and restaurants and loved experimenting with new recipes and healing ingredients. Crowding out the junk in my diet with powerful, whole foods started my journey toward good health. Without these lifestyle changes and the support of a healthy community, I'm sure I would be seriously ill and most certainly would be without my children. After seeing how food and lifestyle changed my own life, I wanted to share it with others. This led me to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, which deepened my understanding and gratitude for healing foods and a balanced lifestyle. Now, I am launching Pio Wellness - a holistic health counseling program where individuals and families can build a community around sustainable wellness. St. Pio spent a large part of his life in ill heath, but said to "pray, hope and not worry" and I try to follow his advice. I am so passionate about helping busy families eat well, eat intuitively and not worry. I offer individual counseling and cooking support as well as group support for cleanses, elimination diets and so much more. Find me on instagram @pio.wellness - I'd love to hear from you, xo
